Srivatsa Gotra and Brigu Rishi Vamsham Lineage

with 21 comments

The word "gotra" means "lineage" in the Sanskrit language. Each gotra takes the name of a famous Rishi or sage who was the patrilineal forebearer of that clan. One of the Gotra is Srivatsasa from Brigu Rishi. Srivatsa Gotra has five Rishis: 1.Bhargava 2. Chyavana 3. Apravana 4. Aruva 5. Jamadagni. All these rishis bel…ong to Brigu Vamsham, over the week end got the Brigu Vamsham Lineage from old document from my father. Please Zoom it to see clearly

      • Dear Gopinath garu

I am not qualified to determine your gotra. You should seek advise from your elders or poojari of your family and follow accordingly.

      • actually brugu is brahma rushi,(askalitha) in the lineage ,lord parashuarama took avatar, also viswamithra too.parashurama gothra is not there. but viswamithra gothra is there.viswamithra later called brahma rushi by vasista due to penance.both parashurama and viswamithra are kshatriya vamsa. the lineages were polluted by marrying other sect, perhaps before or during the period of viswamithra,( see viswamithra janma story) in brahma rushis brigu is uttama rushi.all other have diffirent skalitha stories

    • Pravara is the like your ID card, when ever you meet a person, you exchange the details of you name, place & lineage. Everyday during prayer you must say your pravara indicating your identity and also its important you do that when you visit the temple and see the God. Especially when you visit Jagadguru or peetadhi pathi you must introduce yourself with pravara, that’s is the respectable way to represent yourself. Now coming pravara its self, there are 3 primary set of information that is indicated:
      1. Your Rishsi’s
      2. Your Gotra
      3. Your Name

and finally you end with your greetings which is called ‘Abhivadam’

For Srivatsa Gotra Pravara goes this way:

‘Chatusagara Paryantam, go brhamaneya Shubham bahavathu
      Bhargava, Chavana, Apravana, Auruva, Jamadagnihi
Pancharusheya, SriVatsasa Gotro bhavasya, aapasthambha sutra
krishna Yajurveda Shakhaa dhayaa, sharman aham bho abhivadaye’

      Meaning goes as follows:
‘Out of entire universe which is surrounded by 4 oceans, with atmost respect as a Bramhin I pray
5 rishis of my lineage- Bhargava Rishi, Chavana Rishi, Apravana Rishi, Auruva Rishi & Jamadagni Rishi
of SriVatsa Gotra and performing my duty as per Krishna Yajur Vedam I greet you with at most respect’

      Hope this helps

      Best Regards
      Surendra
